How to restore the OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion Dock to its default settings

I ran into this issue a while ago after making to many changes to my dock and wanting to restore it to its original settings.

I had moved most of the icons in the dock around, resized the dock and also positioned it on the left side of the screen.

As you can see the dock is missing the contacts icon, the iTunes icon and several others. It is also positioned on the left size of the screen and has been resized.

Since there is no restore to defaults option under System Preferences i found that the easiest solution is to restore the dock from the terminal.

Here is how you can do that:

  • Open a new Terminal Window (you can do this by hitting command + space and typing terminal)
  • Type defaults delete and hit Return
  • Type killall Dock and hit Return

This should restore your dock to its original settings, rearrange all icons in the proper order, reposition your dock at the bottom of your screen and reset its size.

Here's a video demonstrating this quick method of reseting the OS X dock to the defaults.

Do you have an easier way of doing this? Leave a comment.
